PHOTOBLIND DE-16 DETECTOR IMAGES HIGH PURITY FREE-ELECTRON MOMENTUM STATES AT UNIVERSITY OF GÖTTINGEN

Researchers at the University of Göttingen have recently published an Open Access article in Phys. Rev. Research, describing the formation of electron probes with well-defined momentum states. This is achieved by a quantized energy and momentum transfer from photons to an electron beam, as the electrons pass through a laser-illuminated graphite sheet.
Some of the electron diffraction data demonstrating the existence of these well-defined momentum states was recorded using a DE-16 direct detector.

The DE-16 detector at Göttingen has undergone a special modification to ensure that it is Photoblind. This Photoblind modification is important for optimizing direct detectors for Ultrafast TEM applications because it ensures that light from the laser beam does not become a source of noise on the detector.
